Organized by the Northeast Hungary region Seat Captaincy of the Order of Vitéz, a commemoration for the victims of dictatorship took place in Nyíregyháza on February 22, 2025. The event featured performances by Vitéz Tekla Laczkó actress, who recited Tibor Kecskési Tollas’ poem “They Tinplated Every Window (Bebádogoztak minden ablakot)”, and Vitéz Sándor Varga actor, who performed Róbert Rácsai’s “October Litany (Októberi Litánia)”.
A speech was delivered by Vitéz István Fülöp, lieutenant of Szatmár region, former deputy Ispán of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, and retired head of the Mátészalka District Office. In his speech, Vitéz István Fülöp emphasized:
“We must do everything in our power to ensure that such atrocities never happen again. For those of us who lived under the rule of the red star, it is our moral duty to remember and to remind others. The consequences of dictatorship—repression, persecution, and the injustices that came with it—affected many of us. Millions worldwide fell victim to communist dictatorship. Among them, many from our own county suffered under the injustices of that era. In addition to the daily repression and persecution, more than 13,000 people were deported from our county alone. But the fact that we are here today to remember reinforces the message inscribed on the memorial: ‘The defeated triumph!'”
At the end of the commemoration, wreaths were laid by the Order of Vitéz’s Northeast Hungary region Seat Captaincy, the Partium Seat Captaincy, and the Hungarian Defence Forces, represented by reserve captain Márk Bihari of the Vitéz Antal Vattai 2nd Territorial Defence Regiment, 5th Recruitment and Supplementary Office. Nyíregyháza and its surrounding towns’ residents paid their respects with candles and flowers.
